AMAZING STORIES

The Marshmallow Planet
By team Blakes
Cassidy, Myim, Benedict, Nicholas, Tom, Daniela and Jennifer

The world is bad because trains don’t exist on my planet of marshmallows. Whatever I say turns into s’mores. Sometimes, I propose outrageous transportation modes, like trains. Our solution unites all ingredients to make trains of s’mores, with rails that are soft and sturdy.

Meanwhile, the trains arrive. They are often partially missing parts because they are eaten by the marshmallow people. Hungry marshmallows still need to get to work, though.

“How are we supposed to not eat the trains?” they cried out. “Have our lives no meaning?”

I propose a groundbreaking solution: make the trains out of s’mores! That way, they won’t be eaten, because the structural integrity of my graham crackers is stronger, since they are stale. Marshmallow people do not eat stale graham crackers, because they cause their teeth to fall out. But at least no graham crackers go to waste.

At least we’re not on a vegetable planet. They have trains, but they really suck. Who wants to ride in a carrot caboose?

Ode to Sharks
By team City in Focus
Ava, Bruce, Jody, Julian, Tom

Oh, beautiful large fish of the sea,
Fierce and fiery are the adjectives I give to thee.
You’ve lived here for four hundred million years,
And still, no fish can be counted among your peers.

Your skin is composed of tiny dermal denticles;
You have no need for any funny tentacles.
With sleek fins and lots of teeth gnashing,
You’d best be careful—or they’ll give you a good thrashing.

The way you soar through the ocean never fails to cause commotion.
While the ocean engulfs you with sweet bliss,
Just know—your presence will be missed.

Zork and the Slug
By team Low Tide
Ashley, Dinah, Patricia, Sophia, Margaret

It was a dark and dreary morning, and Zork was walking through the rainforest—head down, stomping around—bitter, angry, and sad. His hand-me-down size 16 Doc Martens made it nearly impossible to get around.

Suddenly, a massive grapefruit fell from a super-tall grapefruit tree, landing right in front of Zork’s feet and causing him to trip and belly flop onto the path.

There, face-to-face with him, was a stinky, slimy, sluggish, slippery banana slug.

The banana slug, Sylvester, looked up and asked, “Do you come here often?”

Zork looked Sylvester deep in the antennas. Sylvester spoke again, saying, “You don’t look so good.”

Zork grumbled, “Ehh, six-seven.”

Sylvester chuckled. “I always find a song that turns my day around. Sing along with me: ‘I’m walking on slugshine, ooooo ooo!’”

Life Lesson: Every day can be a good day.

The Life of Wilson
By SFU Bball
Coach M, Rachel, Haley, Bre, Sahn, Anushka, Tonya, Neyha

“Why am I so squished? I can’t see anything—or breathe!”
All I could see was my flat, orange reflection. Then, all of a sudden, there was light! I gasped.
“I can breathe!”
Finally, my sad life had purpose. Now, I just had to wait for my moment to shine. Soon enough.
I was grabbed, then bounced, and then… my first time through the hoop!
They call me Wilson, but my pronouns are basket/ball.

I’ve been through the net enough times now that I’m being used in the most stressful moments, with other teams playing. It’s my time to shine. I can tell today is more intense than usual, the players’ clammy hands are leaving sweat on my exterior.

“Tweet!” It’s game time.

It’s been thirty-nine minutes. Coaches are yelling, and the crowd is deafening. All of a sudden, the girls start counting down. As I soar through the air, the net gets closer and closer. I hit the rim before finally… dropping in!

The crowd goes wild. Before I know it, I’m flying through the air in celebration and everyone starts hugging and crying tears of joy.

In no time, I’m sitting in a luxurious trophy case, surrounded by passersby giving oohs and ahhs. I can see my reflection again in the glass—except this time, I’m pumped full of air and happiness.

I sigh with relief, knowing my life’s purpose is complete. I can only hope the rest of my family joins me here soon.

A Day in the Life of a Black Cat
By Team Awesome
Judy, Bill, Shirley, Jeevan, Amélie, Liberty and Senna

A black cat named BunBun was hunting a mouse. She was a very cute mouse, called Minnie. Minnie begged BunBun not to eat her!

“But I am hungry,” said BunBun.

“Let me show you a way to find really tasty food!” said Minnie the mouse.

Together, they opened the fridge, and there was a HUGE piece of cheese!

“But I can’t eat the cheese,” exclaimed the cat. “I’m vegan! I guess I will have to stay hungry. But there’s a good side—it will probably make my coat nice and shiny. I’ll probably win the top place in the beauty contest this weekend!” the cat shouted happily.

Scarwolf
By The Paperback Writers
Will, Emily, Graeme, Sean, Carson and Giulia

The door closed behind Archie’s sister, Madeline, as she walked out of his room. She couldn’t see the scar wolf streak through the door behind her. Madeline had turned nineteen the week before and could no longer see her friend.

Archie’s own scar wolf was curled up on the bed beside him, its face turned toward him as they shared a moment of understanding—as if to say, “Everything may not be okay, but I’ll be here with you.”

Archie’s scar wolf had been with him for as long as he could remember, absorbing his stress and anxiety as the scars spread across its face like crags in a mountain range. His scar wolf might not be with him forever, but they had had one hell of a ride.
