Volunteer Snack Superstar Role 

The Writers’ Exchange is a community that supports under-resourced kids and youth to build their confidence and get excited about reading, writing, and their own potential! We offer fun and innovative literacy-based programs where students get to connect with volunteers through a variety of activities. A day typically looks like: having a snack, playing a game, reading or homework time, then an activity or project. Snack time is a super important (and often very exciting) part of our programs! It’s important to us that the students we work with get all the nutrition and energy they need to learn!  

The Writers’ Exchange is looking to reimagine our food plan to continue in providing healthy, nutritious, and exciting foods for kids and youth in our programs. The Snack Superstar volunteer role will work closely with the Food Coordinator to support the ordering and preparation of food for all Writers’ Exchange programs. At the Writers’ Exchange we work alongside some kind community partners to ensure the kids have access to abundant snacks every day. In this role there is opportunity to have a hand in identifying and cultivating partnerships to seek out food donations and food related opportunities.  

Qualifications: 

  • Strong organization and project management skills 

  • Experience in community partnerships is an asset 

  • Experience in a restaurant or kitchen is an asset  

  • Genuine interest in fostering partnerships on behalf of the Writers’ Exchange 

  • Valid Food Safe certificate (or willingness to obtain) 

Start and End Date:  

July 5th – August 23rd (role can extend to Fall and Winter programs if volunteer wants to continue)   

Time Commitment: 

Approximately 4-6 hours per week. This role requires in-person availability during the morning on Mondays at 877 E Hastings St. with some additional hours throughout the week for communication/emailing (can be done remotely).  

Main Deliverables: 

  • Assist in preparing foods for 16 programs at 5 different locations 

  • Preparing fresh foods to be ready to eat 

  • Portioning out food for various programs 

  • Make weekly food orders based on program needs 

  • Become familiar with the Writers’ Exchange COVID19 health and safety plan (training in this will be supported by Food Coordinator)  

Secondary Deliverables: 

  • Assist in researching various existing or potential donors/partnerships 

  • Gather information on what types of food is offered through donors/partnerships 

  • Gather information on program needs regarding food (numbers, culturally appropriate, and familiar food choices)  

  • Use creativity to imagine various foods we can serve 

  • Become familiar with the Writers’ Exchange and our mission and culture
