Employee and Group Volunteering
"When I was a kid, creative writing was my favourite class, and now I work with words in my career. Writers’ Exchange made me remember how magical reading and writing can be. It was a joy to work with these fun and imaginative kids. Volunteering provides an inspiring break from my regular routine.”—Kristin, part of the Quietly volunteer team
We would love to have you and your co-workers or group join our team of volunteer literacy mentors to help inner-city kids get excited about reading and writing!
In all Writers’ Exchange programs, volunteer mentors work with the kids (ages 5 to 13) to help them read, write and play literacy games. Each program ends with the publication of a book of the kids’ work, which is celebrated at a fantastic launch party.
You can support the kids by volunteering in two program areas:
1. In-School Programs
Help kids create a class publication on a topic they’re studying
Where: Inner-city schools in East Vancouver
When: Weekdays between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m., 1.5 hours/session
Length of Program: 5 sessions at the same time of the week, at the same school, for 5 consecutive weeks + the 1-hour book launch party
2. After-School Programs
Help kids complete homework and fun writing projects
Where: #207 - 877 E Hastings
When: Monday to Thursday, 3:00 to 5:15 p.m.
Length of Program: One day per week for one school term + the 2-hour book launch party.
Why is this an awesome idea?
· In exchange for donating a little time and a lot of encouragement, employees will be (even) happier, and will feel great knowing they helped inner-city kids improve their literacy skills!
· Research shows that employees who participate in workplace volunteer programs are twice as likely to say their corporate culture is very positive, and are more likely to be very proud to work for their company.
We hope you and your team will consider partnering with the Writers’ Exchange to provide meaningful support to inner-city kids! To learn more about how your company can become part of our volunteer team, email Sarah-Jane Hamilton at firstname.lastname@example.org
